NASIG condemns in the strongest terms the unprovoked invasion and military attack on the sovereign state of Ukraine by Russia. We condemn the brutal attacks on civilian populations, homes, hospitals, and evacuation corridors. We denounce the racist treatment inflicted on refugees of color fleeing Ukraine as well as the racist and biased coverage of the crisis by Western media. We call on Ukraine and surrounding countries to equally ensure the welfare of Ukrainians and non-Ukrainians fleeing the conflict.
NASIG stands in alliance with other library organizations to support, promote, and provide assistance in disseminating accurate information regarding the conflict to support democracy and freedom of expression. We stand in solidarity with our colleagues of Ukrainian and Russian heritage in North America who are grappling with fear for their loved ones experiencing this violence.
To support those affected by the invasion, NASIG is donating $500 to CARE’s Ukrainian Crisis Fund. This fund provides “immediate aid and recovery, food, water, hygiene kits, psychosocial support, and cash assistance — prioritizing women and girls, families, and the elderly.”
If you are considering providing aid to Ukraine, the below resources may be useful:
- The NPR piece on “Want to support the people in Ukraine? Here’s how you can help” contains a list of organizations providing assistance.
- Dr. Kimberly St. Julian-Varnon, a Black scholar who studies race and Blackness in the former USSR and Eastern Europe, has curated a Linktree to support BIPOC & Slavic Ukrainian Refugees and disabled Ukrainians.
