INFORMATION & REGISTRATION:
http://www.niso.org/news/events/2012/nisowebinars/embracing_the_cloud/

ABOUT THE WEBINAR

Cloud computing, a concept that has leapt onto the scene in the last few years, is available to libraries in the form of hosted systems for an ILS or for e-resource access. These systems take advantage of cheaper computing power, increased availability of services such as Amazon Web Services, and new development strategies from library vendors. What does moving library information to a networked environment do to improve the overall management of the system? How can libraries leverage cloud-hosted and managed collections? Are there tradeoffs in terms of local control? Learn the answers to these and related issues at this webinar where speakers will discuss actual cloud implementations in library environments.

TOPICS AND SPEAKERS

The Cloud and Libraries
Erik Mitchell, Assistant Professor, School of Information Studies, University of Maryland College Park

Pepperdine University Libraries’ Move to the Cloud Michael Dula, Director for Digital Initiatives & Technology Strategy, Pepperdine University Libraries

REGISTRATION

Registration is per site (access for one computer) and closes at 12:00 pm Eastern on February 8, 2012. Discounts are available for NISO and NASIG members and students.

The best reports are informal, hitting the main points and piquing interest to know more. We will edit to NASIG style; just present the material as if you were informing a colleague about an interesting event — because that is just what you will be doing.

We are currently seeking reports for the following events:

2011 Charleston Conference

ALA Midwinter Meeting @ Dallas

UKSG 35th Annual Conference and Exhibition

21st Annual North Carolina Serials Conference

Electronic Resources and Libraries (ER&L)

Please send your submission directly to Ning Han at nhan@library.msstate.edu by Mar. 15th, 2012 to be included in the next issue of the NASIG Newsletter. Word, OpenOffice, .rtf and plain text submissions are acceptable.

The National Information Standards Organization (NISO) announces the availability of NISO SUSHI Protocol: COUNTER-SUSHI Implementation Profile (NISO RP-14-201X) for a public comment period ending on January 20, 2012. This Recommended Practice provides a practical implementation structure to be used in the creation of reports and services related to harvesting of COUNTER Release 4 reports using the NISO SUSHI Protocol.

The Standardized Usage Statistics Harvesting (SUSHI) Protocol was issued as a standard (ANSI/NISO Z39.93) in 2007 to simplify and automate the harvesting of COUNTER usage reports by libraries from the growing number of information providers they work with. COUNTER (Counting Online Usage of Networked Electronic Resources) is an international initiative that published their first Code of Practice in 2003 and issued Draft Release 4 of the COUNTER Code of Practice for e-Resources in October 2011. The comment period for the COUNTER-SUSHI Implementation Profile and COUNTER Release 4 end on the same date. XML schemas supporting the draft Implementation Profile and draft Release 4 of the Counter Code of Practice have also been published by NISO for review during the comment period.

The new draft Release 4 of the COUNTER Code of Practice is a single, integrated Code of Practice covering journals, databases and books, as well as multimedia content. This COUNTER-SUSHI Implementation Profile supports the changes in Release 4 and was developed with the intention that it could be used by COUNTER auditors to verify compliance of a content provider’s SUSHI server.

The NISO SUSHI Protocol: COUNTER-SUSHI Implementation Profile, the referenced schemas and additional implementation guidance for SUSHI can be found on the SUSHI webpages at: www.niso.org/workrooms/sushi/. The draft Release 4 of the COUNTER Code of Practice is available on the COUNTER website at: www.projectcounter.org/code_practice.html.

The Electronic Communications Committee (ECC) submitted some items of interest for the NASIG Executive Board’s fall meeting last month in Nashville.

The reconstitution of the NASIG-L discussion list several months back also came with additional spam. Spam filtering has been enhanced though a few things manage to seep in now and then. ECC monitors the lists more frequently now in an attempt to catch those items.

The Committee has been reviewing the entire website for outdated information and broken links. Did you notice we added links to Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, and LinkedIn on the NASIG homepage, too? NASIGers have multiple options for getting their NASIG fix!

Other notable items: our site stats are looking good! The NASIG homepage had almost 2,000 page views between October 7 and November 6. The Annual Conference page, with 828 views, is the second most popular page. The NASIG Blog has had 7,144 views since January 2011.
